Emeralds

Emerald Jewellery in Murcia

An emerald is bought for its colour and for the authenticity of the stone. Unlike a diamond, clarity is not the goal here: practically every emerald has tiny internal inclusions (what the trade calls the “garden”), and a perfectly clean emerald is so rare that it raises suspicion before admiration. What is valued is an intense, saturated and even green.

There are two things worth knowing before buying a piece with an emerald. The first is that an emerald is noticeably more fragile than a diamond or a sapphire: it is softer and, above all, those inclusions make it vulnerable to knocks. The second is that the vast majority of emeralds on the market are treated with oils or resins to improve the appearance of their fissures. It is an accepted and widespread practice, but it must be declared on the product page, and it completely determines how the piece should be cleaned afterwards.

That is why emeralds work better in earrings, pendants and occasion rings than in a ring worn every day. If you are looking for intense colour to wear at all hours, a sapphire is a far more resistant alternative with the same presence.

One warning that avoids the most expensive mistake: never clean an emerald in an ultrasonic cleaner. It strips the treatment and leaves the fissures on view.
