Some engagement rings follow the rule; others tell it their own way. This one belongs to the second group: a natural oval emerald in vivid green, held by four claws and framed by a halo of brilliant-cut diamonds, on a plain, polished 18-carat white gold band. It is classic in construction and personal in colour, for anyone who wants their ring recognised at first glance.

Why an emerald for an engagement ring?

Because green says something white does not. A diamond solitaire is the predictable choice; an emerald speaks of someone who chooses on their own terms. It is one of the four precious gems of fine jewellery, alongside diamond, ruby and sapphire, and has stood for renewal and loyalty since antiquity. In the Spanish tradition it gives its name to the emerald wedding anniversary, celebrating 55 years of marriage, and it is the birthstone for May: a ring with a story before it is even given.

What makes a natural emerald special?

Its colour, unlike that of any other stone. Emerald is a variety of beryl that owes its green to small amounts of chromium or vanadium, and what a gemmologist values most is that vivid, saturated green, leaning neither yellow nor blue. Almost all natural emeralds have inclusions visible under a loupe, which jewellers fondly call the stone's "garden": they are not flaws but the trace of how it formed, and proof that it is natural.

An honest point worth knowing: the vast majority of emeralds on the market are treated with oils or resins to improve their visual clarity. It is a traditional, accepted practice in jewellery, but it should be disclosed; ask us in the boutique for the details of this stone.

Why do the oval cut and halo protect the emerald?

Because emerald is hard but not tough. It rates 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratching well, but its inclusions make it more sensitive to sharp knocks than a sapphire or diamond. That is why the emerald cut exists, with its clipped corners, and why this ring gets two decisions right. The oval cut has no points or corners, which is where fractures usually start. And the diamond halo surrounds the stone like a bumper: it protects its outline, makes the emerald look larger and, by contrast, makes its green appear even more intense.

How big is a 0.31-carat emerald?

Bigger than the figure suggests. The carat measures weight, not size, and emerald is a light stone: at a density of around 2.72 g/cm³, against 4.00 for sapphire, at the same weight it takes up roughly 47% more volume, visibly larger proportions in the hand. Add the halo of brilliants, with 0.05 carats spread over stones of about a millimetre each, and the whole reads on the finger as a ring with presence, without being too much for everyday wear.

Can the ring be resized?

Yes, and this design makes it easy. Because the band is plain with no stones on the shoulders, it allows more room for resizing than a ring set all the way round. One important point: soldering heat can damage an emerald, so resizing must be done by a workshop that knows to protect or remove the stone before working the metal. At Pedro Luis Olivares Jeweller we do it in our own workshop in Murcia, with exactly that care, checking the claws afterwards.

How do you care for an emerald ring?

With more care than a diamond and three clear rules. First: clean it only with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush; never ultrasonically, with steam or with solvents, which can affect the stone's oils and open its inclusions. Second: take it off for the gym, gardening, the beach or any task where it might be knocked. Third: apply creams and perfume before putting it on. The white gold carries a rhodium plating that wears over the years to reveal a slightly warm tone; it is renewed in the workshop, where we also check the claws are still secure.

What occasions is this ring for?

For a proposal, an anniversary or a gift to yourself that will last. White gold makes the emerald's green stand out with freshness, and the halo design works just as well next to a diamond eternity band as on its own. You can see and try it at our boutiques on Avenida Constitución, 4 and Gran Vía Escultor Salzillo, 15, in Murcia, where we have been making jewellery since 1925; if this piece is out of stock, we can order it for you or help you choose the closest alternative.

Frequently asked questions

Is the emerald natural?

Yes, it is a natural emerald. Like the vast majority of emeralds on the market, it may have been treated with oils to improve its clarity; ask us for the details of this stone.

Can I wear it every day?

Yes, with care: emerald resists scratching but is sensitive to sharp knocks. The halo protects it, and it is best to take the ring off for sport, gardening or manual tasks.

Can it be resized?

Yes: the plain band allows generous resizing. It must be done by a workshop that protects the emerald from heat, like ours in Murcia.

Can I clean it ultrasonically?

No: emeralds should not be cleaned ultrasonically or with steam. Use warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, or bring it to our workshop.

Does it come with a certificate?

Yes: it comes with the Pedro Luis Olivares Jeweller certificate attesting to the metal and stones, in the house presentation box.

What if it is out of stock?

Ask us in the boutique or by phone: we can order it or show you emerald halo rings with similar characteristics.

A green unlike any other, protected by a circle of light: the ring for saying yes in a way no one else will.
