Breitling's iconic pilot's chronograph for flying, in 1952, Willy Breitling developed a wrist chronograph with a circular slide rule that allowed pilots to perform all necessary flight calculations.
Two years later, the American Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) developed a wrist chronograph with a circular slide rule that allowed pilots to perform all necessary flight calculations. (AOPA) introduced the design as its official watch. Thus was born the navigational chronometer or Navitimer.
At the time, the AOPA was (and still is) the largest pilots' club in the world, whose ranks include almost every aviator in the United States.
Having been chosen as the de facto pilots' watch during the golden age of civil aviation, airline captains and aircraft enthusiasts alike favoured a Navitimer.
So much so that it even made it into space on the wrist of astronaut Scott Carpenter in 1962.
However, the watch's sweeping aesthetics didn't just appeal to pilots; celebrities of the era such as Miles Davis and Serge Gainsbourg were devotees of this chronograph, proving that, as well as precision, the Navitimer had style.
Since its debut 70 years ago there have been many versions of this Breitling icon, but the new Navitimer brings together its most classic features while enhancing them with modern sophistication.
A flat slide rule and convex crystal add elegance to the profile of this chronograph. In addition, alternating polished and brushed metal elements give it a shiny but discreet finish.
Above all, the new colours in shades of blue, green and copper define the new dial options. And if there is one update that is sure to stir the nostalgia of aficionados, it is the return of the AOPA wings to their original position at 12 o'clock.
For 70 years, Breitling's original pilot's watch has been treasured by aviators and trendsetters alike.
Its use by astronauts in space and the world's greatest stars made it Breitling's most iconic timepiece and one of the most recognisable watches of all time.
